As of last Friday afternoon, I'm semi-employed again.
I say semi-employed because I'm not up at the butt crack of dawn, riding a bus in town and going to an office after punching a clock, as I did in my previous employment. Seems weird to me too, but I'm getting used to the idea. I have been hired by a community newspaper and my actual job title is that of "Regional Sports Editor", which puts me in the wheelhouse of what I've been doing on a part time basis sine 2001.
The big difference here is that this time, it's paid.
Even as I reveled in the fact that I am once again going to enjoy the wonders of a regular paycheck again my mind flashed back to when I discovered the aptitude for writing and covering news in high school when I was lectured by a couple of upperclassmen about how writing sports would pigeonhole me to one particular caption of writing style. I disagreed with them back then because to me a writing job is a writing job and if you are good at it, who cares where you land.
Oddly enough, thanks to the wonderment of social media and their foolishness in "friending" me I know that both of those fellows are NOT in the writing business nearly 30-years later after studying and having journalism degrees conferred upon them. So if you measure this in the ability to persevere then I won a gold medal on that one.
Though the title is impressive this is still an entry-level job in which I have a lot to learn and more importantly, re-learn. Writing is a big part of the job the actual construction and layout of the pages is also a huge part of it as well and though I was instructed how to do that when Ronald Reagan was in office, I have slept a LOT since then so getting my had back in that regard will be a bit of a challenge. Still the one thing I am trying to keep in mind is that though it will be hard at first this is ultimately what I've wanted to to...really WANTED to do, since high school. Dropping the ball now would be a big mistake.
I think I can hack it. After all, how hard can it be?
Congratulations! So, it's been about a month. How difficult has it been?
