Finally, someone had the balls to say that political correctness is wrong. More to the point, someone FAMOUS said it, which gives it more traction with the generally stupid American public.
In an upcoming interview with Playboy actor Gary Oldman called out the Hollywood establishment on the subject of political correctness, blasting the double standard that allows people like Jon Stewart and Bill "RatBoy" Maher to slide off the hook while it condemns people like Mel Gibson and Alec Baldwin when they each commit violations of the undefinable "political correct" code of ethics. He will doubtlessly never work in Hollywood again for these remarks, and indeed he will be blasted as a foul mouthed insensitive, intolerant, racist and bigot.
Because that is what this country has come to.
I detest political correctness in any shape or form. It is an excuse for people to have a double standard about their alleged "tolerance". If anything it gives people an excuse to BE hateful and intolerant by accusing people of hate and intolerance. That fact is almost always denied or justified by the fact that those who actually BEING intolerant and hateful to fight intolerance and hate have little, if any, concept of the fact that they are NO BETTER than the people they are allegedly fighting against.
It is a fallacy that we condemn certain people for their beliefs and that we let people slide on others. It's contradictory. It has to be universally applied otherwise it has no meaning. The best line he delivers in the article is about how shame played a role in the selection of "12 years a Slave" winning the Oscar for best picture. He alleges that people were shamed into voting for the film because they would be labeled a racist if they didn't. People will deny that, but it is a plausible accusation. I haven't seen the film so I can't comment on whether or not it's deserving of the award.
At the end of the day, political correctness is a sad commentary on how emasculated this country has become. I often lament on how this country has lost it's arrogance and I am sure the pendulum will swing back in that direction before long.
Right now though, we have to endure hate veiled as political correctness.
