Over the last week, the planet has tried to kill us twice.
On Sunday afternoon and evening, the town of Shawnee, Oklahoma had a tornado run through it. Two people died, hundreds were injured, and it caused millions of dollars in damage. Yesterday, the town of Moore, Oklahoma was flattened by a tornado that killed 24 people (9 children), injured thousands of people, and caused millions of dollars in damage.
In short, it's springtime in Oklahoma. Something we deal with here every year, one way or the other.
The stories coming out of both towns are horrific.
I posted on social media yesterday after the weather had calmed down something that haunts me to this day. I have lived all but 5 years of my life here in Oklahoma. I have lived in this house 36 of those 40 years and I could not imagine, seeing that the houses in Shawnee and Moore are completely destroyed, that happening here. I have no concept of it. What keeps going through my mind is that yesterday morning, people got up, saw their kids off to school and went to work, and in the span of about 20-30 minutes yesterday afternoon people returned home to find everything laid waste. Everything was gone.
This is the neighborhood I grew up in. First I played in the yard and on the street...rode my bike through the streets and later drove. It is familiarity. It would be too much to handle for me.
