I love to observe my fellow human beings. It's been especially fun this year being an election year but recent events indicate that there is yet another reason for so called "open-minded" people to be up in arms about. Apparently all open-minded, intelligent Americans who are sensitive to every race, creed and orientation are supposed to heap scorn on the Chick-fil-A Restaurant chain.
Why? Well their head man, CEO, or whoever has stated publicly that he opposes gay marriage. As a result, Jim Henson's daughter,( the head of Muppets, Inc.), yanked the images and the properties from the restaurants and kids meals. Of course, there was an accompanying national press release, detailing Muppet, Inc's unvavering support for GLAAD and other same-sex supporting organizations and blah-blah-blah.
No...really. That's it.
Well, to the selectively self-righteous, this was an outrage. Social media erupted. Boycotts were planned. Two cities in this country have even denied future CFA restaurants building permits. To visit a Chick-Fil-A. to some, was akin to putting on a sheet and going to an old fashioned lynching.
I got a few problems with that.
A week ago, 12 people were murdered in cold blood at a movie theater. One of whom was a 6-year-old girl. There is a drought in this country that could drive the overall cost of living up, based on a $10-$20 increase in food prices. Gas is almost $4 a gallon. The economy sucks. Unemployment is at a record high, (ask me, I know). All very bad, nay, OUTRAGEOUS things the country could, (and probably should) be up in arms about.
Nope, not in the good old USA. You are labelled a homophome if you deign to purchase food from Chick Fil A, damned for etrenity from the most fashionable minority in this country. Let's not forget that not only will you become a gay-bashing bigot, to some you will automatically be lumped in with a certain political ideology (conservative) that by default connects you with the person who is opposing the current president in the upcoming election (Mitt Romney). Three mayors have said they will attempt to block new construtction of Chick Fil A restaurants and deny them permits.
Silly, I tell ya.
Chick-Fil-A and it's CEO Dan Cathy, somehow rises above all this. With quiet dignity and with the storm swirling about him. He is either admired or reviled. Never mind that his company policy dictates that all people will be served, regardless of race creed disability or sexual orientation, still contraversy rules.
I could care less who marries who in this country. Mind you, it's not because of a "can't beat 'em, join 'em" attitude, it just that I don't care. Myself, I have two former brothers-in-law who are gay and I respect their decisions. If I marry again, and I hope I do, it will be to a female and that's my decision. It's also my decision whether or not to pull into the drive thru at Chick-Fil-A and order me a grilled chicken club sandwich with some waffle fries, and I don't appreciate the self-involved, selectively open-minded twits the equating me with the Klan for doing it.
No one else seems to have the huevos to say this, so I will: It's a fast-food restaurant. Get over it. I'll admit right now that C-F-A is not nor has it ever been my first choice when it comes to a quick bite to eat but with all this nonsense I have added it to my list. Just to piss people off and moreover, to see if they have the guts to confront me about it.
They won't, I know, but for those who choose to they had better educate themselves when they toss around the words "prejudice" and "homophobe" and the other garbage the fashionably disgusted are spewing these days. Prejudice often is an excuse for people that don't have things go their way...racism being the companion term more often than not...and given your typical cause-head, most of them have NO clue what either term means and worse, they are only saying it because the TV or the internet told them to.
